My Fate is in My Own Hands
The Story of My Life
Since 1985, I have been working in the baking industry for 38 years. I used to work at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Central, Hong Kong.
Family or career? It was a difficult choice. Working at a five-star hotel with good pay and benefits was very demanding, with 15-hour work days. When my daughter was born, I couldn't be there for her. By the time I got home from work, she was already fast asleep. I couldn't be there for her as she grew up, which I regretted deeply. So, I decided to quit my job and start my own business to spend more time with my family. I used up all my savings to start my own business. Since my daughter's name is Kiwi, and I specialize in French desserts and pastries, my wife named the company "Kiwi Sweets."
At the beginning of my entrepreneurship journey, I had to rely on sheer determination. Business was not as good as expected, and we had to use my wife's dowry to pay rent. After several years, business started to pick up. In 2012, online unlicensed cake shops became popular, which had a huge impact on my business. So, I switched to wholesale cakes and desserts, and my business was able to recover. I thought the worst was over, but in 2014, social unrest hit, and my business suffered again. And now, the COVID-19 pandemic has left me battered and bruised.
During the fifth wave of the pandemic, all my funds were exhausted, and I couldn't pay my employees or rent. The previous landlord even raised the rent by 50% during this difficult time, which almost crushed my spirit. Just as I was about to give up, one of my employees showed great passion and said, "It doesn't matter if we don't get paid, we'll get through this together!" This rekindled my fighting spirit, and I took out a loan, moved my factory, and started over.
